A Train Suburb on the South Side of O'Hare

Wood Dale has one of the more unusual geographies in our service area. The village wraps around the south edge of O'Hare International Airport on the DuPage County side, which means most of the residential blocks share their skyline with cargo warehouses, light industrial, and a steady overhead flight pattern. The airport proximity shapes the work calendar in small ways — we plan cure windows around rain and heat more than noise, but we do occasionally adjust timing when a crew wants to hear itself think. The Milwaukee District West Metra line runs straight through downtown Wood Dale and anchors the older residential grid around the station.

We work Wood Dale out of our Schaumburg home base. The job mix skews toward driveway and front walk replacements on the post-war blocks, with some genuinely old pre-war concrete near the downtown where the original train-suburb streets went in back in the 1920s and 30s. The post-war sections of Wood Dale look more like a conventional NW Chicago suburb — 1950s, 60s, and 70s ranch homes and split-levels on regular lots, with original driveways that are hitting their end-of-life on a normal curve. On those jobs we usually do straightforward tear-outs with a 5-inch slab, #4 rebar or welded wire mesh, 4 inches of CA-6, and control joints at roughly 8 to 10 feet. The only unusual factor is the occasional O'Hare cargo-route noise, which sometimes makes radio communication between the finisher and the rest of the crew a small challenge during a pour.
